Vienna-based, INDUS Corporation, specializing in providing knowledge-based information technology solutions, is the 69th company on the list.

According to Shiv Krishnan, President & CEO, “Our company’s growth this year has been fueled by several factors: rapidly increasing demand for INDUS’s high quality IT solutions, INDUS’s technology focus on Geographic Information Systems, Data Warehousing, Telecommunication and Internet, and a solid technical team supported by stellar management and administrative infrastructure. The outlook for future growth includes over 200 employees with $20 million in projected gross annual revenues before embarking on the new millennium. We are proud to be included in this prestigious Inc. 500 ranking which salutes our sales growth rate of 2,870% during the past five years.”

California tops the Inc. 500 with 83 companies on the list; Texas is second with 44 firms; Massachusetts placed third with 31 firms. INDUS Applies GIS and Intranet Technology to Support DoJ/NIJ’s “Community Safety Initiative” - August 18, 1998

VIENNA, Virginia (August 18, 1998) PRNewswire – INDUS Corporation. INDUS Corporation’s Geographic Information System (GIS) professionals are currently involved in supporting the National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) research on developing crime prevention strategies in five major U.S. cities. NIJ’s new initiative for “Strategic Approaches to Community Safety” involves a cooperative arrangement between the Office of the U.S. Attorney and local officials to study and analyze crime to develop “strategic interventions” to prevent specific types of crimes including juvenile violence, homicide, gun-related crimes, and rape/sex related crimes.

Direct expenditure for each of the major criminal justice functions (police, corrections, judicial) has been increasing. The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) reports the following facts:

The nation’s adult prison population grew by 5.2 % in 1997.
Over 40% of the increase in the prison population since 1980 is due to an increase in the prisoners convicted of violent offenses.
Nine states reported prison population increases of at least 10% during 1997.
Sex offenders comprise 1% of the federal prison population, and 9.7% of the state prison population
The jail inmate population included about 9,100 juveniles in 1997.
During 1997 an average of 328,000 queries per month came into the FBI’s Crime Information Center about the records of people who wanted to purchase firearms or carry firearm permits.

A creative new strategy to prevent crime would significantly reduce the expenditures of a criminal justice system which is traditionally geared to responding to crimes after harm is done.

INDUS professionals have visited several of five pilot cities which include Winston-Salem, NC; New Haven, CT; Indianapolis, IN; Portland, OR, and Memphis, TN to gather information. INDUS’s GIS analysts have interviewed approximately 170 local law enforcement related personnel to gather information to help NIJ determine potential user needs and analyze requirements for the “Community Safety Information System.” According to Mr. Robert Stropky, INDUS Project Manager for this NIJ initiative, “This system will likely be an intranet- based system with a data repository built from crime and related data provided by multiple local, state, and Federal agencies.” The system will provide information about criminal incidents within specified geographic boundaries and enable users to identify and analyze local crime problems. The system will produce maps corresponding to data sets and allow visual crime analysis. System generated reports will support decision-making processes for law enforcement and other local officials to facilitate timely identification of crime patterns and development of strategic interventions to implement law enforcement measures.

The objective of this pilot project initiated by the NIJ is to increase the capacity of the U.S. Attorneys, working in partnership with federal, state, and local criminal justice agencies and a research entity, to collaborate on data collection and analysis, design targeted strategies, and plan interventions to prevent crime and protect community safety.
